About the company and the work
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is one of South Africa’s well-known pharmacy and health retail groups, with stores across the country selling medicines, health and beauty products and everyday frontshop lines. The frontshop is the busy retail floor of the store, where customers browse, ask questions and pay. At Westown Square, the Frontshop Assistant upholds the store’s merchandising standards while supporting customer service at the point of sale, working in line with Dis-Chem policies and procedures. It is hands-on, on-your-feet work in a fast-moving store, with regular contact with customers and the rest of the store team.
Role details and duties
The duties stated in the advert include:
- Ensure that full ranges of products are on the shelves at all times and neatly presented.
- Maintain the stock on the shelves to ensure it has not reached its sell-by date, and rotate stock regularly in line with Dis-Chem stock control procedures.
- Restock merchandise and supplies when needed to ensure maximum sales, including stock delivered to the store and stock pulled from the storeroom, stored and packed in the correct places.
- Follow up on all out-of-stock queries from customers, in line with the customer service outcome expected by the store.
- Ensure merchandise displays, labels and pricing are correct at all times and report all price discrepancies.
- Keep the storeroom organised, neat and tidy, and flatten boxes after unpacking stock and take them to the designated area.

- Handle all merchandise carefully to prevent any losses, and ensure outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for.
- Transact all purchases: receive, verify and process all payments such as cash, cards, vouchers and cheques.
- Exchange merchandise for customers and accept returned goods when authorised to do so.
- Process all loyalty cards, including those of accelerated partners.
- Ensure cash is placed in the drop safe according to standard operating procedures, and ensure accurate cash flow at all times.
- Ensure all line voids and price changes are approved and signed by a Frontshop Leader and/or Retail Manager.
- Report low stock levels, items that are out of stock, damaged stock and expired stock to management, and identify and report damaged and expired stock immediately.
- Assist with the counting of stock files and general stocktaking.

Where to find and apply safely
This vacancy is listed on Careers24, and the Apply button on this page takes you directly to the original advert (reference 209603). Apply only through the original advert, and never pay anyone to process your application. Dis-Chem states that only successful applicants will be contacted, and if you have not been contacted within two weeks after the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful.
Practical tips
Because this is a frontshop role, show that you are comfortable on the shop floor: mention any till, shelf-packing or customer-service experience, even if it was short, and be ready to talk about how you handle a busy queue, a price query or a customer who cannot find a product. Accuracy matters here, so highlight careful cash handling and attention to expiry dates and pricing. Check that your transport arrangements cover retail hours, including weekends and public holidays, since the advert lists a driver’s licence and own reliable transport as a condition of employment.
How the process works
When you apply through the original advert, your application goes to Dis-Chem for shortlisting. If your background matches what is asked for, you can expect to be contacted about the next steps; if you do not hear back within two weeks after the closing date, the advert states that only successful applicants will be contacted. Keep a copy of your application and the advert reference (209603) so you can quote it in any follow-up.
