Welding and NDT Inspector Jobs in Roodepoort

Unique Personnel · Roodepoort

Welder working with sparks

Unique Personnel is recruiting a Welding and NDT Inspector for a permanent role in Roodepoort. The salary is negotiable, and applications close on 27 November 2026. The advert reference number is 80884. This is a quality-critical role in structural steel fabrication, where the inspector is the last line of defence before product reaches the client.

About the company and the work

The vacancy is advertised by Unique Personnel, a recruitment agency, for a client in the structural steel fabrication field serving bulk materials handling, conveyor and mining equipment work. The inspector covers the full fabrication journey, from pre-fabrication checks through in-process inspection, final inspection and non-destructive testing, to documentation and client release. The work takes place in a workshop environment with noise, dust, fumes and overhead lifting, and includes site visits to mines and plants, including underground or at height where required. Full personal protective equipment is required, and overtime and weekend work can be expected at month-end, during shutdowns or when delivery dates are tight.

Role details and duties

The advert sets out the work in six areas:

  • Pre-fabrication and material control: reviewing drawings, specifications and the quality control plan before fabrication starts and flagging inspection and hold points; verifying incoming steel such as plate, channel, angle, rectangular hollow section and pipe against mill certificates, grade and dimensions; confirming that approved welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification records are in place and that welders hold the right qualifications; and checking consumables storage, electrode baking and handling.
  • In-process inspection: inspecting fit-up, joint preparation, root gaps, alignment and tack welds before welding; monitoring welding parameters such as amperage, voltage, travel speed, preheat and interpass temperature against the approved procedures; and carrying out dimensional checks on frames, stringers, legs and idler frames, including length, squareness and diagonals.
  • Final inspection and NDT: performing 10% visual inspection of completed welds to ISO 5817 and AWS D1.1 acceptance levels as specified; performing Level 2 magnetic particle testing on fillet and butt welds, lifting lugs and critical joints; performing Level 2 ultrasonic testing on full-penetration butt welds, thick sections and critical structural items; completing NDT procedures, inspections and technique sheets for approval by the Level 3 inspector where required; and raising non-conformance reports, specifying repairs and re-inspecting repaired welds.
  • Surface preparation and coating: verifying blast profile, cleanliness, dry film thickness and the coating system against the painting specification where it applies.
  • Documentation and client interface: completing inspection and test records, NDT reports, dimensional reports and release notes; compiling the final data book, including quality control plan sign-offs, material certificates, welder qualifications and NDT reports; ensuring NDT equipment, gauges and calibration blocks are in date and calibrated; and supporting root-cause analysis and continuous improvement of welding quality and repair rates.

The confirmed facts are: the role is based in Roodepoort, it is permanent, the salary is negotiable, and applications close on 27 November 2026.

Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements, as stated in the original advert:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science; an N4 to N6 qualification or a National Diploma in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering is advantageous.
  • Magnetic particle testing at Level 2, certified by SAQCC-NDT or PCN to ISO 9712 and current; a multi-sector endorsement is advantageous.
  • Ultrasonic testing at Level 2 for welds, certified by SAQCC-NDT or PCN to ISO 9712 and current; phased array ultrasonic testing at Level 2 is advantageous.
  • Welding inspection at IIW or SAIW Welding Inspector Level 2, or CSWIP 3.1; IIW Welding Specialist or Senior Inspector is advantageous.
  • Penetrant testing at Level 2 and visual testing at Level 2 are advantageous, as is NACE or AMPP CIP Level 1 or SAIW coating inspector certification.
  • Three to five years of experience inspecting structural steel fabrication; experience with bulk materials handling, conveyor or mining equipment is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of ISO 5817, ISO 17640, ISO 17638, AWS D1.1 and SANS 10094 and SANS 2001-CS1; knowledge of ISO 3834 and ISO 9001 quality systems is advantageous.
  • A valid driver’s licence (Code B or EB); own transport is advantageous.
  • Fit for work, with a valid eye test covering near vision at Jaeger J1 and colour vision, as ISO 9712 requires; working at heights and site induction tickets are advantageous.
  • The ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols and tolerances accurately; to set up and calibrate ultrasonic flaw detectors and magnetic particle yokes independently; to write clear, accurate reports in English; and to be computer literate in Excel, Word and PDF reporting.
  • A firm but constructive approach with production teams, holding the line on non-conforming work, plus strong organisation, attention to detail and the ability to manage several orders at once.

The advert also lists performance measures for the role: zero non-conforming product released to the client, inspection and NDT reports issued within 24 hours of the test, data books complete at dispatch, the weld repair rate tracked and trending down, and certifications and equipment calibrations kept current.

Where to find and apply safely

Apply only through the original Careers24 listing, using the Apply button on this page, which links directly to that listing. The advert is marked as an external application, so it will take you to the recruiter’s application route. Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay a fee to secure a job or who contacts you outside the official listing; genuine employers and recruiters do not charge applicants for placement.

Practical tips

This is a certification-driven advert, so lead with your current certifications: list each NDT method, its level and its certifying body, and confirm that your eye test is current. Attach or offer your welder and procedure qualification evidence, your calibration records and examples of data books or reports you have compiled, since documentation is a large part of the role. Because the work covers both workshop and site visits, mention your fitness for work at heights and your willingness to work overtime and weekends during shutdowns.

How the process works

Applications are submitted through the Careers24 listing for this vacancy, which is marked as an external application. The advert had 88 views at the time this post was prepared, with no application count shown, so interest appears modest for a specialist role. Applicants whose certifications and fabrication experience match the stated requirements stand the best chance of being shortlisted.
