Role details and duties
- Design, build and maintain clean, extendable GraphQL schemas, types, mutations, subscriptions and directives across client applications.
- Write, test and optimise asynchronous resolvers that connect GraphQL endpoints to microservices, REST APIs and database layers.
- Build federated graphs and use schema stitching to bring separate back-end services together into one unified data graph.
- Guard against overload risks with batching and caching, using tools such as DataLoader and Redis.
- Set query complexity checks, depth limits and field-level access control to protect the GraphQL engine.
- Work with React, React Native, Angular and mobile teams so schemas match what each client actually needs.
- Keep schema documentation, playground environments and developer tooling up to date, and monitor query performance.
- Take part in agile ceremonies, giving estimates and contributing to schema design reviews.
Requirements
- A National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of commercial software development experience, with at least 2 years of dedicated, hands-on work building production GraphQL layers.
- Mastery of the modern GraphQL stack, including Apollo Server and Client, GraphQL Java, Hasura, Prisma or TypeGraphQL, using TypeScript with Node.js or Java.
- Demonstrated skill with DataLoader, Redis and query caching, and experience integrating GraphQL layers with React, Next.js, React Native or Angular.
- A strong understanding of how GraphQL compares with REST, gRPC and SOAP, plus solid analytical and communication skills.
- Cloud or developer certifications, and experience in IT consulting or telecommunications, are advantageous.
