Role details and duties
You will lead electrical design for 11kV to 132kV substations, switching stations and grid connection infrastructure, and develop and review overhead line designs covering conductor selection, structures, clearances and earthing. You will prepare and review single-line diagrams, protection and control schemes, equipment specifications and related design documents, and liaise with utilities, network operators and grid authorities to ensure compliance with connection requirements. You will review contractor and vendor designs, drawings and technical submissions, support procurement through technical specifications and tender evaluations, and provide technical guidance during construction, testing, commissioning and project handover. You will also mentor junior engineers and maintain high standards of technical quality and risk management.
Requirements
Applicants need a BEng or BSc Eng in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent relevant qualification, plus a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification electrical engineering experience. Direct, hands-on experience with 11kV to 132kV substations and overhead lines is essential, as is ECSA registration or eligibility to register. You need strong knowledge of protection systems, earthing, switching and power system fundamentals, an understanding of South African electrical standards, grid codes and renewable energy evacuation systems, and excellent technical report-writing and drawing-review skills. A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites nationally are also required. Advantageous experience includes Independent Power Producer projects, exposure to systems above 132kV, consulting engineering or EPCM environments, and familiarity with power system analysis software and design tools.
