MSP Staffing’s client is seeking an experienced Senior Android Mobile Engineer to join its team in Johannesburg, responsible for designing, developing, maintaining and optimising Android applications deployed on custom Android devices for Point of Sale and payment solutions. Role details and duties

Key responsibilities include designing, developing and maintaining scalable, reusable and maintainable Android applications; developing applications for custom Android devices; translating business and technical requirements into effective development solutions; integrating APIs and backend services; supporting release management, deployment processes and production troubleshooting; optimising mobile application performance; working with offline data storage and synchronisation; maintaining and enhancing existing software systems; identifying and resolving software defects, integration issues and performance bottlenecks; participating in architecture reviews, design reviews and code reviews; and providing technical leadership, mentoring developers and promoting engineering best practices.

Requirements

• 7+ years of Android application development experience.
• Expert-level Android application development skills; expert knowledge of Kotlin development; advanced Java development skills.
• Expert understanding of Android SDK and mobile application architecture; knowledge of mobile design patterns and development best practices.
• Experience developing applications for custom Android devices.
• Strong understanding of API integration and backend services.
• Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines; working knowledge of Azure DevOps and Azure Pipelines.
• Advanced knowledge of Git version control.
• Strong mobile application performance optimisation skills.
• Experience with offline data storage and synchronisation; experience with ObjectBox database.
• Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
• Experience with testing frameworks such as Espresso and JUnit.
• Experience with Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Cloud Messaging.
• Familiarity with Java, Kotlin, Compose, Android SDK, Material 3 and XML UI development.
• Experience with Retrofit, Dagger Hilt, Kotlin Coroutines and WorkManager.
• Familiarity with LaunchDarkly and feature management tools (advantageous).
• Experience with Sunmi and Urovo Android devices (advantageous).
• Understanding of application security, quality assurance and development governance standards.
• Ability to collaborate with Product, QA, Engineering, Operations and business stakeholders.
• Strong planning, organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to take ownership of technical initiatives and deliver results.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced fintech and payments environment.
• Commitment to continuous improvement, software quality and reliable customer-focused solutions.
• Experience working in Agile software development environments; experience with application maintenance, defect resolution and production support; experience mentoring developers and contributing to code reviews and technical architecture decisions.
