Principal Telco Platform Engineer Jobs in South Africa

A client is seeking a principal telco platform engineer to lead the design, integration and delivery of all network-facing systems within the company’s telco domain, in Midrand. Offered through Recru-it, this permanent senior role in the Telco / DevOps team reports to the Head of DevOps and combines hands-on architecture and engineering with team leadership of five engineers.

About the company and the work

The client operates a telco platform covering BSS integration, billing, OSS, device management and portal and API development, and needs a technical design authority who can own the telco stack end to end.

Role details / duties

• Own the end-to-end technical architecture for the telco section, covering BSS, OSS, billing, provisioning and related systems.
• Define integration patterns, API contracts and data flow standards across the telco platform stack, and align architecture with TM Forum Open API standards where applicable.
• Make architectural decisions and document them through Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and related documents, and establish coding standards, code review practices and quality gates.
• Design and build integrations between BSS and OSS systems, including billing, order management and related systems, and develop and maintain RESTful APIs.
• Build middleware and orchestration layers for complex telco business processes, and implement event-driven architectures using message queues such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.
• Develop observability pipelines including logging, metrics, alerting and dashboarding, and ensure data consistency and integrity across integrated systems.
• Lead and technically mentor a team of five engineers, drive sprint planning, backlog grooming and technical prioritisation, and conduct code and architecture reviews.
• Provide technical oversight of outsourced system builds, act as the primary technical interface between the telco engineering team and internal stakeholders, and support vendor evaluation and build-versus-buy decisions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a significant portion in backend systems and distributed systems.
• Demonstrated experience as a tech lead, principal engineer or technical design authority.
• Strong proficiency in Python, with production experience building API-driven microservices.
• Hands-on experience with REST API design, development and governance, including versioning and authentication.
• Experience with distributed systems patterns including message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, NATS) and event-driven design.
• Solid experience with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), containerisation (Docker), and CI/CD.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), including schema design and data modelling.
• Track record of mentoring and leading engineering teams of 3-6 people, including code reviews.
• Strong documentation and communication skills, including ADRs and integration documents, and ability to troubleshoot complex integration failures in production.
• Preferred: telecommunications, ISP or network service provider experience; telecom provisioning, network management or BSS/OSS integration experience; TM Forum Open APIs and Open Digital Architecture; ServiceNow CSM, SOM or ITSM integration via REST APIs; network fundamentals such as IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, SNMP and TR-069/ACS; observability stacks such as ELK, Grafana or Prometheus; AWS Solutions Architect or Kubernetes certification; third-party vendor delivery oversight; Golang, Java or C/C++ in addition to Python; infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Pulumi or Ansible.
