A Cape Town consulting engineering team is looking for a Principal Civil Engineer to lead the design and delivery of civil and municipal infrastructure projects. This permanent role suits a professionally registered engineer with deep consulting experience, strong technical judgement and the leadership skills to guide a multidisciplinary team from first concept through to construction.
About the company and the work
The role is advertised by MSP Staffing (PTY) LTD, a specialist recruitment agency focused on engineering and construction, mining and related sectors, on behalf of a client with a Cape Town team. The work centres on civil infrastructure for building developments and municipal projects, so the successful candidate will combine hands-on design leadership with client and authority engagement across the Western Cape.
Role details and duties
The Principal Civil Engineer will lead the design and delivery of civil engineering and municipal infrastructure projects, managing designs from feasibility and concept development through detailed design, tender and construction. Key duties include providing technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, technologists and BIM/CAD personnel; coordinating civil designs and models with architects, structural engineers, MEP teams and other consultants; conducting technical reviews, design verification and quality assurance; managing project deliverables, budgets, programmes and technical resources; supporting tender submissions, fee proposals and business development initiatives; and providing construction-stage technical support, responding to requests for information and carrying out site work. The role also involves liaising with clients, municipal authorities and other stakeholders to facilitate project approvals.
Requirements
Applicants need a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised institution and Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA. The advert calls for typically 8 or more years of relevant consulting engineering experience, proven experience in civil infrastructure design and delivery for building developments and municipal projects, and strong technical knowledge of roads, access infrastructure, bulk earthworks, platform design and stormwater. Experience with municipal services and external infrastructure connections is required, along with a strong understanding of South African engineering standards, municipal requirements and relevant design codes. Candidates should be proficient in Civil 3D and understand BIM-enabled design and multidisciplinary coordination, be able to prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, reports, specifications and tender documents, and be able to undertake technical reviews and design sign-off where required. Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills are essential. Experience in structural design, previous involvement in projects requiring City of Cape Town approvals, and experience operating at Principal or Associate level within a consulting engineering environment are listed as advantageous.
