A1L Digital is recruiting a Manager: Data Science for a client in the Telco sector, based in Johannesburg – Southern Suburbs. This is a fixed-term, full-time contract role running for 6 to 12 months, for a data science professional who can own production AI and machine learning work in banking, finance or telecommunications.

Role details and duties
- Own production AI and machine learning models, including automated decisioning such as recommendation, propensity, fraud and forecasting models, with quantified business impact.
- Work across data science and data analysis, data engineering and enterprise-scale data infrastructure.
- Build and improve CI/CD applications for collaboration, driving a develop-once-and-deploy-to-many approach through container repositories, using GitHub or GitLab.
- Work in an Agile and DevOps environment, and use software tools to query and report on data while remaining software agnostic.
- Handle data analysis and management, business performance management and reporting within the financial sector or banking industry.
- Work across global locations and regions, with an understanding of the political, social, infrastructure and integrity challenges involved.
Requirements
- Minimum of a 4-year tertiary degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or a related field. A Master’s degree in Data Science, AI/ML, Statistics or a related field is preferred, and an MBA or Masters is advantageous.
- 5 or more years of relevant work experience as a Data Engineer or Data Scientist.
- 4 to 6+ years of applied data science, including 2+ years owning production AI/ML.
- At least 3 years of experience within a non-traditional FinTech, Banking or Financial Services sector.
- Experience in Data Science and Data Analysis with a specific focus on AI/ML models within banking, finance and/or telecommunications.
- Proven delivery of automated decisioning with quantified business impact.
- Experience in Data Engineering within banking or financial services, and an understanding of enterprise-scale systems and data infrastructure technologies.
- Experience working in an Agile/DevOps environment, with GitHub or GitLab experience for CI/CD.
- Proficiency in Python and its relevant libraries, SAS or R / Scala for data clean-up and advanced data analytics.
- Working knowledge of Hadoop, Apache Spark and related Big Data technologies (MapReduce, PIG, HIVE).
- Highly proficient in database management systems such as Postgres, Oracle, Mongo and MSSQL.
- Experience working in a medium to large organisation. Experience in ecommerce and electronic payment business is advantageous.
