This is a strong starting point for someone who likes numbers, detail and logistics but has not yet worked as an estimator. The role is based onsite in Cape Town and comes with full training in freight forwarding estimating, so previous estimating experience is not required.
About the company and the work
The role is advertised through Datafin, a South African recruitment company, for a client that works in freight forwarding, customs clearing and supply chain services. The estimator sits in the heart of that operation, turning shipment details into accurate, well-checked cost estimates for clients.
It is a permanent, junior-level, onsite position. Because estimates affect pricing, profit and client trust, accuracy and clear communication are central to the work.

- Prepare accurate freight forwarding cost estimates using the CargoWise system.
- Check that all information needed for an estimate is complete and correct before work begins.
- Request rates from preferred providers on the same day where possible.
- Review estimates for accuracy, pricing logic, commercial risk and alignment with the client.
- Explain assumptions, exclusions and risks clearly to colleagues and clients.
- Obtain management approval before an estimate is issued.
- Keep an up-to-date daily Estimate Register and follow up on outstanding estimates.
- Record client feedback and look for upselling and cross-selling opportunities.
- Carry out quality checks on estimates and keep up to date with customs and trade law changes.
- Deal ethically with clients and providers, and escalate customs, tariff or regulatory questions to the General Manager.
- Take part in structured training and mentoring in CargoWise and estimating.
