Professionals meeting in an office in South Africa

The Department of Electricity and Energy is looking for a Chairperson for its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Steering Committee, on a three-year contract. The appointment appears in DPSA Circular 39 of 2026 as Post 39/07, under the heading Other Post. The centre is Pretoria, and the closing date is 13 November 2026 at 16:00.

About the company and the work

The Department of Electricity and Energy is a national government department responsible for energy policy and related services in South Africa. Like every large department, it depends on its technology systems to run its work, from the networks and software its staff use every day to the data and digital services behind its programmes. The ICT Steering Committee is the body that guides how the department plans, buys and uses that technology. Its Chairperson leads the committee and advises the Accounting Officer, helping to make sure that technology spending and projects serve the department’s goals, follow the rules, and deliver value for money.

Role details and duties

The Chairperson will be responsible for leading the Committee in advising the Accounting Officer in fulfilling statutory responsibilities in terms of the Public Finance Management Act and other relevant prescripts, as they relate to ICT governance. The key areas of work are: ICT Governance and Strategy, leading the Committee to oversee the development, implementation and monitoring of the ICT Strategy and Enterprise Architecture, ensuring alignment with the department’s strategic objectives; ICT Investment and Resource Management, chairing the review and recommendation of the ICT budget, overseeing major ICT capital projects, ensuring value for money, and monitoring expenditure in line with PFMA and National Treasury requirements; Project and Portfolio Management, providing leadership in the oversight of the prioritisation, execution and delivery of all ICT projects, with a focus on project governance, risk management and benefits realisation; Cybersecurity and Information Security, steering the Committee’s oversight of robust cybersecurity and information security measures, including compliance with POPIA, MISS and the National Cybersecurity Policy Framework, and managing ICT-related risks; Service Delivery and Digital Transformation, guiding the Committee’s monitoring of ICT service performance and reliability, championing digital transformation initiatives to improve service delivery, and overseeing the management of service level agreements; and Compliance and Legislative Alignment, including reporting the Committee’s views and recommendations to the Accounting Officer, and acting as the primary liaison between the Committee, the Accounting Officer, and the Audit and Risk Management Committee on ICT governance matters. This is a three-year contract appointment. The advertisement states that the salary is in accordance with National Treasury rates, and it does not give a rand figure.

Only the requirements stated in the advertisement are listed here:

  • An NQF level 9 qualification in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or Computer Science, or an equivalent qualification with expertise in Information and Communication Technology

  • Applicants may not be in the employment of the Department, and must have no business or personal relationship with the Department

Where to find and apply safely

This appointment appears in DPSA Circular 39 of 2026, in the Electricity and Energy section. Applications should be accompanied by a comprehensive CV and emailed, quoting the relevant reference number, to [email protected]. Use the Apply button on this page, which points to the original DPSA source document, and follow the application instructions given there. Never pay anyone who offers to secure a government appointment for you.

Practical tips

Send a comprehensive CV, and quote the relevant reference number in your email, as the advertisement asks. Because the closing date is 13 November 2026 at 16:00, send your application well before the deadline, and keep a copy of what you sent. If you need clarity on the appointment, the advertisement lists enquiries as Mr Shuping on (012) 406 7711. The advertisement also notes that applicants who do not comply with the stated requirements, and applications received after the closing date, will not be considered.

How the process works

The advertisement states that the requirements set out in the advertised post are minimum inherent requirements, and that criteria for shortlisting will depend on the proficiency of the applications received. The Department reserves the right to determine a suitable candidate during the selection process. Confirmation of final appointment will be subject to a positive security clearance. Due to the larger number of responses anticipated, correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and applicants who have not been contacted during this period may regard their applications as unsuccessful.

Important information

This page is informational only. It does not replace the official DPSA advertisement, and it does not guarantee an appointment. This is a committee chairperson appointment on a three-year contract, not a standard permanent departmental post, and the advertisement states that applicants may not be employed by the Department and must have no business or personal relationship with it. Always confirm the closing date, reference number and application instructions in the original DPSA document before applying.
