Falcorp Resourcing is looking for an Erlang Developer in Fairlands for a fixed-term, full-time role. This is a specialist backend position for a functional programming practitioner who can build high-throughput, low-latency and fault-tolerant distributed systems that keep running without interruption.
About the company and the work
The role is listed on PNet by Falcorp Resourcing. The Erlang Developer works at the heart of enterprise backend communications, real-time messaging and high-concurrency event platforms, engineering resilient services capable of continuous operation. The work demands strong problem-solving skills, a deep understanding of OTP behaviours and a data-driven approach to system performance, memory management and concurrency.
Role details and duties
- Develop and maintain high-concurrency, fault-tolerant and distributed backend applications using Erlang and OTP.
- Design and implement lightweight process architectures, supervision trees and state management actors using gen_server, gen_statem and custom OTP behaviours.
- Build, optimise and secure low-latency network communication protocols, including TCP and UDP, WebSockets, gRPC, REST and custom binary protocols.
- Diagnose, debug and resolve performance bottlenecks, memory leaks and process deadlocks using Erlang tracing and telemetry tools such as observer, recon and redbug.
- Integrate distributed data stores, in-memory databases and message brokers, for example Mnesia, ETS and DETS, Redis, Apache Kafka and RabbitMQ.
- Drive zero-downtime application updates using Erlang code hot-swapping and rolling upgrade releases.
- Own code quality, test coverage and documentation, conduct peer code reviews and write robust unit and integration tests using EUnit and Common Test.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, providing precise technical estimations, story point sizing and clear execution pathways during sprint planning.
- Containerise applications and automate deployment pipelines across cloud infrastructure using Docker, Kubernetes, Rebar3 and CI/CD automation tools.
- Partner with DevOps teams to set up real-time monitoring, metric collection and alerting for distributed nodes across multi-datacentre setups.
Requirements
- A National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years of commercial software engineering experience, with at least 3 years of dedicated hands-on Erlang development on production-grade systems.
- Professional experience with functional programming paradigms, BEAM ecosystem languages such as Erlang and Elixir, or actor-model frameworks.
- Experience in Telecommunications, FinTech, Gaming or High-Volume Media domains will be highly advantageous.
- Deep structural knowledge of OTP design principles, supervisors, application structures, release management with Rebar3 and distributed BEAM node communication.
- Advanced proficiency with distributed storage engines such as Mnesia, ETS and DETS, and distributed consensus architectures.
- A solid grasp of Linux systems, network programming, socket tuning and containerised deployment workflows using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Hands-on experience with automated test suites such as EUnit and Common Test, and property-based testing concepts such as Proper and QuickCheck.
- Advanced proficiency navigating, customising and generating insights from enterprise tracking ecosystems.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication capability, with a proven track record of translating complex distributed systems constraints into clear summaries for non-technical stakeholders.
Where to find and apply safely
This opportunity is listed on PNet by Falcorp Resourcing. Apply only through the original listing using the Apply button on this page, which opens the original job advert. Never pay a fee to apply for a job, and be cautious of anyone asking for money, banking details or personal documents before an interview.
Practical tips
Be ready to talk through a supervision tree you designed and how it handled failures in production. Prepare examples of tracing a memory leak or deadlock with observer, recon or redbug, and of a zero-downtime release done with hot code swapping. Mention your experience with Mnesia or ETS, message brokers and containerised deployments, and be ready to explain a distributed systems trade-off in plain language.
How the process works
After applying through the original listing, the recruiter reviews applications and contacts shortlisted candidates. Further steps typically include interviews and technical discussions about Erlang and OTP design, followed by an offer for the fixed-term role.
