The Government Printing Works is looking for an Artisan Foreman Grade A for ID Craft Booklet Making in Pretoria. This supervisory trade role sits at the heart of secure booklet production, where raw material, printing and binding must come together without faults.
About the department and the work
The Government Printing Works produces secure documents, including ID documents and booklets, for government. In craft booklet making, the quality of the raw material, the accuracy of cutting and binding, and the security of every batch all matter. A faulty booklet cannot simply be passed on, so checks and careful record-keeping run through the whole process.
Role details and duties
The foreman will order and prepare the material needed for ID document and booklet making, and oversee quality assurance for the raw material as it is ordered and prepared, so faulty booklets are prevented. The role includes making sure stock movements are recorded and shortages are reported at once, and that security measures are followed and all work is done to the schedules and production targets in the section. The successful candidate will manufacture documents and booklets to the required specifications and standards, oversee and control production so security protocols are followed, and check printed matter before assembly. Assembling ID documents and booklets in the correct order, with accurate cutting, folding, foiling and binding, and controlling the movement of work in progress are central duties, along with reducing waste, monitoring safety risks, and supervising, training and developing learners, artisans and printers’ assistants.
Requirements
- Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification, plus a completed apprenticeship.
- A Trade Test Certificate in an appropriate field, in craft book binding or mechanised binding; Grade 12 will be an added advantage.
- Able to obtain a positive security clearance.
- At least 5 years of post-apprenticeship experience in the functional area.
- A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
