Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a Casual Frontshop Assistant for its Pearls store in Umhlanga. This is a part-time position for someone who enjoys working on the shop floor, keeping shelves full and neat, and helping customers at the till. If you have a Matric and a little retail experience, or are keen to build it, this is a practical way into one of South Africa’s best-known pharmacy retailers.
About the company and the work
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is a major South African pharmacy and health retailer, and the Pearls store in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, is where this role is based. The frontshop is the retail heart of the store: the shelves, displays and tills that customers use every day. The Casual Frontshop Assistant upholds merchandising standards while supporting customer service at the point of sale, in line with Dis-Chem policies and procedures. This is a different vacancy from the permanent Frontshop Assistant role at Dis-Chem’s Westown Square store in Durban: different store, different reference and a part-time, casual arrangement.
Role details and duties
The duties stated in the advert include:
- Ensuring full ranges of products are on the shelves at all times and neatly presented.
- Maintaining stock on the shelves so it has not reached its sell-by date, and rotating stock regularly under Dis-Chem stock control procedures.
- Restocking merchandise when needed to ensure maximum sales, including stock from the storeroom and delivered stock.
- Following up on all out-of-stock queries from customers, in line with customer service outcomes.
- Ensuring merchandise displays, labels and pricing are correct at all times and reporting price discrepancies.
- Keeping the storeroom organised, neat and tidy, and flattening boxes after unpacking stock.
- Keeping up to date with new product knowledge to assist customers effectively, and assisting with back shopping when required.
- Handling all merchandise carefully to prevent losses.
- Transacting all purchases: receiving, verifying and processing payments such as cash, cards and vouchers.
- Exchanging merchandise and accepting returned goods when authorised to do so.
- Processing all loyalty cards, including those of accelerated partners.
- Placing cash in the drop safe according to standard operating procedures, and ensuring accurate cash flow at all times.
- Ensuring line voids and price changes are approved and signed by a Frontshop Leader or Retail Manager.
- Reporting low stock levels, out-of-stock items, damaged stock and expired stock to management, and identifying and reporting damaged and expired stock immediately.
- Assisting with counting stock files and general stocktaking, and with loading and off-loading stock when needed.
- Establishing a professional relationship with customers and providing friendly, helpful and courteous assistance, and reporting customer compliments and complaints to management.
- Adhering to the customer turnover per hour rate as per the company benchmark.
- Assisting with training new and current team members.
- Ensuring outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for, and keeping daily takings secure.
- Reporting bad and suspicious behaviour, for both staff and customers, to management.
- Housekeeping in accordance with Dis-Chem standards, and adherence to Dis-Chem policies, standard operating procedures, health and safety rules, and the uniform and personal appearance policy.
