A client in the glass manufacturing industry is looking for an Assistant Control Engineer to join its Engineering Department in Springs, reporting to the Senior Control Engineer. This full-time role suits a graduate electrical or electronic engineer with a strong interest in industrial software and control.
About the company and the work
The role is offered through AtripleA recruitment & temps for a glass manufacturing client. Float glass manufacturing makes extensive use of PLC and SCADA control systems, covering raw material mixing, melting and annealing, and high-speed cutting and packaging.
Role details and duties
- Support very accurate mixing of dry raw materials, such as sand and dolomite, for the glass process.
- Support continuous control for glass melting and annealing, including extensive use of PID control loops with scope for advanced control.
- Support high-speed discrete control for glass cutting and packaging, including motion control using servo drives, conveyor control using variable frequency drives, accurate tracking of glass for cutting and stacking, and use of robots for glass stacking.
- Work with variable frequency drives across many areas, and extensive Ethernet networking for all levels of communication.
- Support control of large diesel generators to start and switch automatically in the event of a power failure.
- Work with SCADA systems for supervisory control.
- Support the interface between the control system environment and a data historian, an MIS system and SAP.
Requirements
- BSc Engineering or B Engineering in Electrical or Electronic engineering.
- One to three years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- A specific interest in industrial software and control using PLCs, variable speed drives and servo systems.
- Experience developing PLC software in areas such as PLC control of a large-scale continuous process using PID control, control of a high-speed discrete system such as a packing line, integration of PLC and SCADA systems with an MIS system, or exposure to third-party measurement systems.
- Experience with at least two of the following is highly advantageous: PLC control of variable speed drives; Rockwell motion control systems using ControlLogix PLCs; Rockwell FactoryTalk View SCADA system, especially in a large-scale multi-server environment; exposure to and working knowledge of industrial instrumentation as used in a continuous process.
- A very good knowledge of Ethernet networks as applied in an industrial environment.
- An ability to lead people and work as part of a team.
- Registered with ECSA as a candidate engineer, with the intention of obtaining professional registration.
- An interest in low voltage and medium voltage reticulation, although this is not the main focus.
- Prepared to work hands on when necessary.
- Good leadership skills, with a view to taking on a management role in the future.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
